Sep 29: The Adventure begins

Early start for our tour: Mohammod is our driver/guide; Margy from Geelong our only other companion and the means of transport: a mini van with a pop-top.

I'm writing this the next day, and because so much has happened it's going to be an impressions only entry!

We drive down the escarpment from Nairobi into the Rift Valley, across agricultural plains, through small townships, and for three quarters of the 6 hour journey on good sealed roads.

We arrive at Masai Simba Lodge in time for lunch: we are the only house guests!  3 people with staff and facilities for more than 50 I think!  The recent terrorism attacks have really taken a toll on tourism here.  But it did mean that we didn't have to compete for riverside balcony seating from where we viewed a monitor lizard, baby crocodiles, a hippo, and had a bread roll stolen by a monkey.

4pm we head out for our first safari in the Masai Mara.  Oh boy! What a start.  Not 100 metres outside the lodge we encounter giraffes.

All manner of gazelles, antelope, zebra,

And rounding a corner, not 15 minutes into the drive a proud lion mother is watching her 3 Cubs playing on the track just ahead of us!

Within the space of 2 hours we also meet warthogs, wildebeest, elephant, 2 male lions chasing after the same female we saw earlier, a bush baby, vultures, guinea fowl and so much more.

As dusk falls we are treated to a spectacular thunderstorm.

What a start!  My head is spinning!
