Oct 15: Glamping!

Somewhat different accommodation here in the Kruger.  Very comfortable tent, but with no separation from the game reserve, except a couple of electrified wires strung above head height - just enough to keep elephants out.  So come nightfall we are escorted around camp by a guard with a serious rifle!

Our plane was late so by the time we arrived at camp there was just enough time to dump our bags before setting out on our first evening game drive.  In the rain!  In an open top Land Rover!  We have a driver/guide whose name is Scotch, and the spotter who sits perched on a seat on the bonnet, named Patrick.  (Just love their names, we have a waitress called Happiness, and one of the bar men is called happiness too!)

Due to the chilly conditions the game was sheltering, but we still managed to find the elusive leopard resting after having hauled his kill up into a tree.

And a few other loan beasts in the failing light.  Being a small private game reserve on the edge of the Kruger, there aren't the huge numbers af animals we saw in Kenya and Tanzania.  An advantage of being private though, is that they don't seem to keep strictly to the rules we followed elsewhere.  Vehicles often go off track - a big no-no usually.  And we are allowed outside of the vehicles for refreshment stops.  For our Sundowner, and a huge picnic breakfast in the mornings.
