But, having said that, we were treated to a rare sighting of the black rhino. A scarey sighting actually that happenened so quickly we barely got the chance to capture a photo in the dull morning light. It ran across the road just in front of us, then turned, eyeballed us and looked to be about to charge at our vehicle. Prosper fired up the engine and the rhino quickly took flight away from us. Phew. Wow. That was a frightening few seconds. There's something rather unsettling about large dangerous animals making eye contact!
Spring is still in the air: or am I to blame - having done that fertility dance with the Masai an' all - even ostriches were at it today!
The highlight of the day had to be the lions: can't get enough of them! This pride: two sisters and three Cubs walked around our vehicle, played, walked around us, allowed us to drive alongside as they strolled up the track, sheltered in our shadow. For half an hour or so, we felt so privileged to be in their company.
That was so special: right there we said to each other, it was worth all the planning, all the money, just to share those moments with this beautiful creature.
And there were more moments on this mornings drive: a picnic breakfast next to a hippo pool. One of the rare times we have been allowed outside our vehicle.
Got pretty close to some flamingos
Saw a hippo rolling in a mud bath
Had some quiet time observing bird life
And ran with a warthog
And then bliss ... A whole afternoon in utterly quiet solitude resting, reading in our room with uninterrupted views of Ngorongoro Crater.
Perfect day for us: not so much for Margy who spent the day in bed with altitude sickness: had to call the doctor in, poor soul.
